DELIVERING ALL-DAY CHARGING

Honeywell licenses NuCurrent’s technology to achieve 10W of charging at 10mm of separation with proprietary authentication and security for its Dolphin CN80 and CN85 Mobile Computers.

Challenge

Delivery trucks are harsh environments for mobile computers. They’re pulled in and out of their cradles and exposed to all sorts of elements, which causes problems with the connectors. When the connectors fail, the device can fail, and when that happens, the logistics company can fail. Many mobile computer devices are ruggedized, which results in a thicker device. This makes wireless charging difficult (particularly when using the Qi wireless charging standard), because it creates additional separation between the transmitter and receiver.

Solution

For this project, NuCurrent developed a custom solution that would address Honeywell’s requirement to deliver 10 Watts of power across 8-10mm of separation. The previous Qi standard was 5 Watts at 3-5mm, and could not deliver wireless power to the mobile computers.

Results

Honeywell’s Dolphin CN80 and CN85 mobile computers are now in production and more products are expected to follow soon, including multi-bay charging stations and other advanced charging options. Based on the experience of delivering this, and other products, NuCurrent expanded the Qi specification with its MP-A17 design, delivering 15W of continuous charging at 9-15mm of separation.
