Amongst a crowded wearables market that’s dominated by the world’s biggest tech companies, WHOOP has become a widely popular digital fitness and health coaching platform. Through their wearable technology, a detailed understanding of a user’s physical performance is provided by collecting physiological data 24/7.
In the previous hardware release (WHOOP 3.0), custom copper connectors were used on the wearable battery pack. For the recently launched WHOOP 4.0, the company worked with NuCurrent to eliminate those connectors entirely and upgrade the charging experience.
For this project, NuCurrent developed a custom NFC Wireless Charging solution that addresses WHOOP 4.0’s requirements for wireless charging and over-the-air uART, allowing for a continuous feed of biometric and performance data flowing from WHOOP members. Through NuCurrent’s NuEva NFC Development Platform, NuCurrent developed a solution that delivers 1.2W of power received, 424 kbps and 115.2 kbps 8/n/1 uART. This is a first-of-its-kind solution that replaces a wired connection. Additionally, this solution utilizes the NFC Forum Global Wireless Charging Specification, but delivers 2.4x more power and 8x faster data rates compared to other NFC Charging devices.
